Core State Standards

Many of you may be aware of the Common Core State Standards Initiative. These standards establish a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English, language arts and mathematics. Kansas is one of 40 plus states that have adopted these standards. The standards are designed to ensure that students who graduate from high school are prepared to enter credit courses in two or four year college programs or enter the workforce. The standards are clear and concise to ensure that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of the expectations in reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and mathematics in school. The intent is to get all the states “on the same page” educationally.

At this point there are no standards for early education centers.  Our 50 Kansas Lutheran EC centers are encouraged to become familiar with the kindergarten standards and plan their curriculums to prepare the children for those expectations.

We have relied on the Blue Valley kindergarten teachers to keep us on track. And of course, we heavily rely on developmentally appropriate skills and methods of teaching this young age from 18mo-6yr. If you ever have questions about our methods of teaching, please don’t hesitate to ask.
